The Burning Desire meets - The Flaming C

Delightful Envy - Conan O'Brien Gets Animated by DC Animation Legend Bruce Timm.

I'm working on a follow-up post to Wednesday's amazing TEDxPotomac / TEDxLive event during the first ever TEDWomen conference here in DC. The TEDxPotomacWomen event hosted one of my favorite TED Super Heroes, Danish Architect, Bjarke Ingels.

But while you're waiting for detailed thoughts on that front, check out the Super-hilarious Conan O'Brien as he talks shop with the Creative Director of Warner Brothers Animation, Peter Girardi, just a guy who works at WB. LOL.

Animator Bruce Timm was responsible for the re-visioning of the DC Universe during the 1990's, first with the animated series the New Adventures of Batman. His design style was the key inspiration for the design of yours-truly, The Burning Desire.

Enjoy some laughs while Conan revisits some not-so-heroic or super Super Heroes from the DC vault, and the process of designing his alter ego - The Flaming C.

What are you #Thankfulfor?

It's 5 AM. All across the country women are waking to place their carefully prepared turkeys in warm ovens awaiting. I am outside parading around in the cold and rain, chasing after a furry little "turkey" who woke me up at 4 am, and yet I'm smiling because I hold this fantastic device in my hand that allows a moment of frustration and fatigue to turn in to a love letter as I realize how lucky I am to have a life so rich in friends so dear that it is truly an honor to care for our small tribes's mascot while some of our pilgrims make journeys to the lands of their families and others work saving lives.

How my heart soars and stomach growls to think of our beautiful and delicious tradition ahead in Leesburg.

I miss my people, my motley crew of jangled generations and miss-matched marriages that fare far better than fairytales. I will miss that chaos and those embraces today.

But as I prepare to tiptoe back to snuggle back into bed for some Thanksgiving sleep-in, I have to be #thankfulfor Charlie for starting these thoughts to swirling in these wee hours of the morning.

Thanks, Charlie. You're alright. When you're not being a dick. ;-)

Welcome Aboard the Hipster Express

I'm currently speeding along I-95 in the wonderfully appointed, wi-fi enhanced luxury coach dubbed The Hipster Express. Since I'm on my way to Brooklyn for Part II of my 45th birthday celebration, I can't help but smile - rather wanly - when I think that this perhaps brands me officially as an "aging hipster." But my smile brightens when I think of who's waiting on the other end of the line. Ten years ago I met my best friend, the brilliant and beautiful, Beth Toland. We started on the same day @Sapient, me as Sr. Creative Lead, she also as a Creative Lead. We sat at the same open desk "pod" and soon realized we must have been twins separated at birth - okay and six years and two days: November 18 & 20. Since we first called a meeting of the Harcourt Health Dev Team and yelled "Surprise! it's our birthday!" and handed out cake and party hats, we've celebrated every birthday together. Every birthday except last year. Just after our birthdays in 2008, my beautiful
B moved to Boston and six months later NYC. 2009 was our first separate birthday. In an effort to right that wrong, I'm taking my first trip on TheKnowItExpress. Launched just last month by Sholanda Hunter. She started the service just after my trip up here for ComiCon, but I've been looking forward to try it out. Very conveniently located DC starting point at 10th & U, I was able to ride my handy-dandy BikeShare bike to the early am departure in record time.

Imagine my surprise to have a warm smiling face waiting to check my name off as I boarded. Traveling with @knowitxp felt like starting out on a field trip with your favorite teacher. She brought water and passed it to those who raised hands. We voted on the movie choices, and she carefully explained where we'll be dropped off and where to find her on the way home. Although I've loved having a seat to myself, I hope you'll join me in regularly filling up seats to regularly connect "hip" family & friends in both Brooklyn and DC. > >

Forward From the tooth fairies - Nepal

This is an update from my Dad. He's in Nepal. Helping people smile by doing dentistry for monks and orphans. My dad is a true superhero.
Left my HEART in NEPAL

All is going well--Treated 89 kids and a few adults today.  Long one --75% fillings and 25% extractions.  Great crew and my student assistants try very hard to please. They are all Tibetan refugees from way up in the mountains.  This school is home to 637 kids who live here full time.  One assistant has not been home for 2years.  She has to take ride by some vehicle for 2 days and then hike for 6 days as there are no roads to her home.  The school is amazing what they accomplish.  The main goal is education and to return to their villages to teach others reducing ignorance and  preserving their Tibetan heritage.
Must go.  Love you all   G and MA

NY ComiCon Highlights

Wow, there was simply so much to see and do and learn that I feel like I was barely able to scratch the surface in my one short day. Nonetheless, I saw some great sessions, got some cool sneak peaks, and had a blast with new friend Sue Wang, aka @curious_sue.

One of the big highlights for me was the panel with Stan Lee where he and his team from his new company Guardian Media Entertainment announced their new project, The Guardian Project. This introduces a new partnership with the NHL and a whole new universe of 30 superheroes, loosely tied to the 30 NHL hockey team "mascots".

It really seems like it will be more than a mere merch-slinging endeavor. They hired veteran illustrator Neal Adams for the artwork and hero design and it took them 8 years to complete the project because they really wanted to get the stories right.

They all seemed genuinely excited about the concept. It's certainly unique, and I hope it meets it's goals of generating more interest in team sports  and a multiple-generational appeal to both the sport and the heroes.
